Our Story

The Global Entrepreneurship Cup was born from a simple observation by a group of educators and industry veterans: while students possessed brilliant, world-changing ideas, they often lacked the practical arena to test, refine, and launch them. Traditional education provided the theoretical foundation, but a crucial bridge to real-world application was missing.

What began as a small, local hackathon has since blossomed into a global movement. We saw the need to cultivate not just innovators, but well-rounded leaders. This led to the creation of our unique multi-event format, integrating strategic problem-solving with high-stakes debate and lightning-fast pitching to build resilience, communication, and ethical foresight.

Today, the GEC is more than a competition; it's a launchpad. We are committed to creating a platform for growth, collaboration, and tangible impact, empowering the next generation to bridge the gap between classroom theory and professional reality and equipping them with the global network needed to thrive.

Mission and Vision

Mission: To ignite passion and ingenuity in young innovators by providing an immersive, challenging, and supportive environment that fosters entrepreneurial skills, ethical leadership, and sustainable business practices.

Vision: To build a global community of forward-thinking leaders equipped to navigate the complexities of the modern economic landscape and drive positive change.

Challenges to Global Entrepreneurship Education

  • Lack of resources: Many countries, particularly developing ones, lack the resources, equipment, and trained teachers needed to implement entrepreneurship education programming effectively.
  • Integration gaps: There is often a disconnect between education, government policies, and industry needs.
    • Weak government policies and a lack of supportive environments in educational institutions can hinder progress.
    • Programs often struggle to move beyond theoretical concepts and integrate with other disciplines.
  • Measurement issues: It is difficult to accurately measure the impact of entrepreneurship education programs, which can make it challenging to prove their value and secure consistent support.
  • Educator preparedness: In many countries, there is a lack of faculty collaboration and training for instructors, limiting their ability to teach entrepreneurial skills effectively.
  • Cultural factors: Social norms and a fear of failure can sometimes discourage entrepreneurship, impacting participation rates even when resources are available

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible to participate?

The Business Hackathon is tailored specifically for students in Years 10 to 12. Both school-affiliated and independent teams are welcome to apply.

What is the team size?

Teams must consist of two to six (2-6) dedicated members. We encourage a diversity of skills and backgrounds within each team.

How do we apply if our school isn't participating?

Passionate individuals are encouraged to apply independently by assembling their own teams. As part of the entry process, independent teams must submit a succinct recorded video introduction (max 3 minutes) that highlights their original business idea or solution.

Is there a registration fee?

There is no fee to apply for the initial local rounds. Our goal is to make the competition accessible to all aspiring entrepreneurs. Some costs may be associated with travel for regional and global finals, but we actively work with sponsors to provide travel stipends for qualifying teams.

Do we need a fully formed business idea to apply?

Not at all! For the initial application, we are more interested in your team's passion, analytical skills, and potential. The main Business Hackathon scenario is provided to all teams, so you will develop your core solution as part of the competition itself. Independent teams should present an initial concept in their video, but it can be at an early stage.

What happens after we submit our application?

Once the application window closes, our committee reviews all submissions. Shortlisted teams will be notified via email and invited to participate in their respective local rounds. The selection process considers the team's passion, analytical potential, and the clarity of their initial ideas (for independent teams).

What is the expected time commitment for participants?

The time commitment varies. During the three-month preparation for the hackathon, teams might spend 2-5 hours per week on research and collaboration. The competition rounds themselves are intensive weekend events. We've designed the schedule to be manageable alongside regular academic studies.

What kind of support and resources do teams receive?

All participants gain access to our comprehensive resource portal, which includes study guides, case studies, and workshops. During the competition, teams will have opportunities to attend mentorship sessions with industry experts to help refine their ideas and presentation skills.

For Educators and Mentors

What is my role as a judge for the debates and pitches?

As a judge, your primary role is to provide a fair and objective assessment of each team's performance. You will listen to presentations and arguments, evaluate them against a standardized rubric, ask insightful questions to test their understanding, and offer constructive feedback to help students learn and grow from the experience.

Will there be specific judging criteria or rubric to follow?

Absolutely. For each event, you will receive a detailed judging rubric that outlines the specific criteria for evaluation, such as clarity of argument, feasibility of the business model, innovation, and presentation quality. This ensures that all teams are assessed consistently and fairly across the board.

What is the expected role of a teacher or mentor for a team?

Mentors are crucial guides, but not team members. Your role is to provide feedback, help students access resources, ask challenging questions to refine their ideas, and assist with project management. However, all the core research, solution development, and presentation work must be done by the students themselves.

How does participating in the GEC benefit my students?

Beyond the competition itself, students develop critical real-world skills including public speaking, strategic analysis, financial literacy, teamwork, and problem-solving under pressure. Participation is a significant achievement that can enhance their university applications and future career prospects by demonstrating initiative and practical experience.

Will there be networking opportunities?

Yes! We strongly believe in the power of community. We will host dedicated networking events and workshops for all participating educators and mentors. These sessions are a great opportunity to connect with peers from other schools, share best practices, and build a strong support network.
